Mahjong solitaire is a tile-matching game, not the four-player gambling game of the same name. You are given a stacked layout of 144 tiles and clear it by matching identical pairs — but only tiles that are free, meaning nothing sits on top and at least one side is open.

The whole game is in the order you choose. Matching the first pair you see usually buries a tile you needed, and a layout that looked half-finished becomes unwinnable. Strong play means clearing from the top and the edges and leaving the stacked centre for last.

Every board here is generated so that a complete solution exists, which means a dead end is always a decision you made rather than a board you were handed.
